This site is for the making-of documentation for the Intermod Series. The main Intermod website can be seen here. Intermodulation occurs when two or more signals mix generating a new or modified signal. Launched in 1999, the Intermod Series engages through interference. Methods of propagation include altering the electromagnetic field surrounding the electric-power grid, FM radio and boosted CB radio transmissions, launching rockets in the city to alter the atmosphere, and a spotters’ skywatch network and purging event. Developed for interaction, the projects are distributed with mailers, 1-800 numbers, embroidered patches and stickers, radio monitoring frequencies, or online forums and journals. A more casual intermod discussion can be found here.

After putting out a call for spaces to have the event/gathering I got a response from my friend Bill Milosz. He offered up a boiler room on the north side of Chicago. When I first visited I took this snapshot. It was the perfect space. Obviously, it needed to be cleared out but they’d been meaning to do that for awhile and so they did. And look how it’s all concrete.. even the ceiling.

I picked an unusual envelope with a flap to mail the guide. This was the least successful part of the printing process. The printer somehow put a gradient on the logo… twice (i.e. even after making them do it again) and messed up the alignments. I ran out of time and mailed it anyway. It still bothers me.

OK, let’s take a break from the model for a second. This is a photo of the KC-135 Ground Tracking Network Spotters’ Guide. If you were on the Intermod Series mailing list then you received one of these. I designed it as a two-sided fold out pamphlet style guide that you could carry in your pocket. One side had silhouettes of the KC-135 with identifying features. The other side had the text explaining the what how where and whens. The binoculars were not provided - that was staging for the photograph.
